This workshop will help therapists learn how to appeal to both parents and teens.
An essential task of adolescent development is the gradual and successful transfer of accountability for managing responsibilities from parents to teens. This requires youth developing their own motivation and commitment to managing their responsibilities. Symptom development or chronic destructive behavior in youth invariably implies a breakdown of this process.
In this training Brown applies his unique brand of Brief Family Therapy to this population using the principles of Brief Therapy and Structural Family Therapy to help families get “unstuck” and back on a healthy developmental path forward.
In this training you will learn:
- A unique way to frame the problem that decreases blame and externalizes it, allowing for more distance and maneuverability
- Build a coalition to create mutual goals
- Strategies to recognize, name, and disrupt power struggles also known as negative complementary patterns
- A powerful strategy to establish or re-establish accountability to healthy parental authority
