Swift and Effective

We transform the solutions that have been unconsciously sustaining the problem; change the situation and gain tools to prevent it from recurring.

Successfully implemented changes are sustained over time.

The therapy is brief by listening to the problem the person brings in and the ways it is a problem for them, and also by some counter intuitive elements. Our colleagues at LoBuenoSiBreve argue that the  client decides how quickly or how slow to move: we follow. We will not push if the client is not ready to move: we will adjust goals and expectations so that the client feels supported but not pressured. We especially do not go in a direction that they are not interested in. When we sense disinterest- we do a u-turn and clarify the problem, the basic descriptions, attempts to solve in the past and their motivation. When the therapy stalls, we use that as part of the therapy as an opportunity to focus and empower the client in their pacing and regulation of pressure for change.

What is Brief Therapy?

Brief Therapy is an innovative psychotherapeutic approach that originated at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, in the 1960s. It is characterized by being brief and focused, aimed at resolving specific problems that are important to the person asking for help – our client–within a limited time frame using structured, goal-oriented interventions to achieve rapid and effective changes, that are always tailor made for the consultant.

Today, at the Brief Therapy Center (BTC) under the direction of Karin Schlanger, this pioneering approach has been refined while maintaining its commitment to effectiveness and innovation. With over forty years of experience supervising and training therapists, Karin and her team ensure that Brief Therapy remains relevant and effective in addressing contemporary mental health and psychological well-being challenges.

Benefits

We believe in and advocate for learning that is not only book-based but also gives practical experience the relevance it deserves. We offer specialized training with real-life cases and interactive sessions with our instructors. Many of the participants in our trainings have said that they have learned more from us in terms of practice than what they learned at the University. Our team has the luxury of focusing more on practice and less on theory.

Effective

Unlike other therapy methods, Brief Therapy seeks short-term solutions and does not open unnecessary doors.

Focused on You

Our goal is to address your current issues, improve, and change your life starting from tomorrow, without continuously  searching for explanations the past. We focus on descriptions, not look for explanations, because you probably already know those!

Approachable

Our team of professionals will make you feel at home; trust is the first step. You will teach us about you and we will offer suggestions as to what to do differently in the future to move forward.

Our model

In traditional models, therapists open more doors, addressing more problems than those the client presents. This often results in solutions never fully materializing or, when they do, not being sustained over time.

What is the Virtual Mirror?

Our supervision model is unique: while one of our professionals is working with a client, part of the team observes.

In traditional therapy, this approach may not be useful, as the process of self-discovery is seen as the primary means for solving problems. However, in Brief Therapy, we use questions to shift the client’s perspective and generate action, allowing us to effectively turn the client’s reality around.

Brief Problem Resolution Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach focused on solving specific problems quickly and effectively. It originated at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, in the 1960s, and is characterized by being brief, focused, and oriented towards practical solutions that achieve sustainable changes in a short period of time.

This model focuses on identifying and changing the solutions that clients have already tried, which have unintentionally kept the problem in place. The idea is to work with the client to find new solutions, focusing on what they can do in the present to change their situation and achieve a better future, without focusing on or getting stuck in the past.

The model is based on three key principles: 1) The importance of focusing on practical solutions rather than past problems, 2) Creating a space where the client can visualize their future, and 3) Focusing on concrete actions that promote quick and lasting change.

Unlike other approaches that may focus on diagnoses or explore the client’s past during prolonged sessions, Brief Problem Resolution Therapy focuses on the present, allowing changes to occur more quickly and sustainably. This reduces the need for long treatments and enhances the effectiveness of interventions.

We address all kinds of problems. This approach is effective for treating a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, family difficulties, work problems, and emotional challenges. Its goal is to address them quickly and effectively, with a solution-focused approach that directly applies to the client’s current situation.

While many traditional approaches aim to delve into diagnosis or explore the root cause of problems, Brief Problem Resolution Therapy focuses on what is useful and relevant to the client in the present. It seeks a more direct and effective intervention, without spending time exploring unnecessary aspects of the past.

At the Brief Therapy Center, we offer specialized and unique training programs that include practical training, case supervision, and learning tools that you can immediately apply in your clinical practice. The training focuses on practice and learning the fundamental principles that guide this therapeutic approach.
